Phillps Staying, Ameobi Deal On?
West Brom striker and reported Ipswich target Kevin Phillips looks set to extend his stay at the Hawthorns, meaning that the Baggies will ditch their interest in Town target Shola Ameobi.
Ipswich allegedly put in a £3.5 million bid for the Newcastle striker two weeks ago, with a subsequent 'no comment' issued on the club's website. It was believed that Ameobi was holding out for a Premiership club to come in for him.
Later reports suggested that Ipswich boss Jim Magilton hadn't spoke to the former England U21 international, as Ameobi was yet to return from his honeymoon. West Brom then had a fee accepted for the Magpies striker, believed to be £2.5 million. The Baggies were keen for Ameobi to replace striker Kevin Phillips who looked set to leave the Hawthorns.
However, the veteran Baggies striker is now on the verge of signing a new deal, claiming that the chance to play in the Premiership at this stage of his career is too big an opportunity to miss. Phillips had originally wanted a two-year deal, while ex-Ipswich defender and West Brom boss Tony Mowbray only willing to offer the 34-year-old a one-year contract.
This now leaves Ameobi searching for a new club after being told he is not part of Kevin Keegan's plans at Newcastle. Ipswich are still thought to be interested as they continue their search for a goalscorer that will take them to the Premiership.
